Pointless theatre’s Rhinoceros is an abbreviated adaptation of Ionesco’s 1959 play. This absurd show tells the story of a man navigating through a world in which everyone around him turns into a Rhinoceros. The play deals with many issues we face today such as the rise of fascism, fear of the spread of disease, racism, and individuality. Pointless theatre company has created fantastic puppets, musical rhino songs, and beautiful lights to tell this surreal story.

For me as the lighting designer I focused on two main components of the story. The first being using light to maintain a sense of normalcy through some of the earlier Rhino appearances, and using that baseline sense of normalcy to highten the Rhinoceros action as the play progresses. The other thing I focused on was the textural reference to the color green, and using green in tandem with the Rhinoceros’ transformation and increasing dominance in the world.

Reviews

“scenes separated by extremely loud and arresting incidents of rhino invasion — signaled in the Pointless production by eyepopping lighting (Hailey Laroe), pounding sound (Aj Johnson), and ingenious puppets (Jess Rassp). The rhino interludes are done so fun one looks forward to them.” - DC Theatre Arts
