Billy & George is a new play that encourages audiences to reimagine what the relationship between George Washington and his close confidant, and slave, Willian (Billy) Lee might have been like. This Play challenges us to imagine a relationship with skewed power dynamics, while simultaneously holding real love and intimacy. On this particular night in 1776 Billy and George prepare to Cross the Delaware river. We see them on a night full of fear, tension, and optimism for a future that could bring very different outcomes for them both. Perhaps most importantly this show hopes to confront America’s violent past with slavery, and connect it to todays struggles for racial and economic equality, and justice. The play asks the question, what has changed from the power dynamics of 1776 to now?
