Black Pearl Sings tells the story of Alberta “Pearl” Johnson, an African American woman imprisoned in Texas in the 1930s, and her eventual partnership with Susannah Mullally, a musicologist trying to collect songs from “slavery times”. As Susannah and Pearl travel from Texas to New York City, Pearl is forced to confront her past and ancestral history through song.
