School Girls; Or the African Mean Girls Play. When a new girl comes to a new school in Ghana right before a big pageant, her arrival disrupts the delicate social structure of the other girls. While on the Surface there are petty fights and lots of childish drama, but at its heart , this show deals with body image, colorism, and the unfair expectations and standards society has placed on these girls.
Reviews
“Lighting designer Hailey LaRoe’s use of spotlights to transport the characters and the audience to a stage much grander than that of the school cafeteria deserves honorable mention. The use of light in moments like these scattered throughout the play guides the audience on the internal musings of the characters.” - DC Theatre Arts
“the play invites us to watch the dynamics of these teenage girls as they navigate jealousy, heartbreak, deception, loyalty, and the overwhelming need to simply be seen.” - Broadway World
