Saturday Night Fever, based on the 1977 film, is about the life of Tony Manero as told though disco. Tony navigates life, love, and friendship in 1970s Brooklyn NY. On the surface this musical is a flashy disco show featuring many hits from The Bee Gees. While this show is at times overtly sexist and relies on stereotypes that haven’t aged well, at its core SNF explores the ways one can cope with poverty, express emotion and desire at a time it wasn’t considered ‘masculine’ to do so, and shows how dance can lead to love and friendship at a times of despair. Tony uses dancing as an escape from the drudges of his family and work life, and ultimately finds love.
